County Clare is a wonderful place to explore as a family, with plenty to keep little ones and grown-ups happily occupied.
With sandy beaches, ancient castles, and days out in the Burren, there is always something new to discover. You can keep things active, take things slowly, or simply see where the day takes you.
With Ennis as your base, many of the best things to do with kids in Clare are within easy reach of us here at Hotel Woodstock.
Hazel Mountain Chocolate Factory
For a sweeter family adventure, Hazel Mountain Chocolate Factory is well worth adding to your Burren itinerary. Children can discover how chocolate is made from bean to bar, peek into the working factory and, on a guided tour, learn more about the process before the all-important tasting. The café is a lovely spot to linger afterwards over hot chocolate and something homemade. You’ll find Hazel Mountain about 45 minutes from Hotel Woodstock, making it an easy addition to a family day exploring north Clare.
Aillwee Burren Experience
Around 40 minutes from Hotel Woodstock, Aillwee Burren Experience is a great family day out in the heart of the Burren. Back above ground, children can see eagles, owls, hawks and other raptors at the Birds of Prey Centre. With plenty to fascinate curious young explorers, it’s an easy choice for families looking for adventure in County Clare.
Alpaca Experience
For something a little different, a family alpaca experience offers a gentle way to enjoy the West Clare countryside. At The Flying Alpaca near Kilkee, families can meet these wonderfully curious animals, learn about their care and personalities, and take part in an alpaca walk. It’s particularly enjoyable for older children who like animals and hands-on experiences. The journey takes around an hour from Hotel Woodstock, so it pairs nicely with a day exploring Kilkee and the surrounding coast. Advance booking is recommended.
Loophead Lighthouse

Dating from the 15th century, the castle is particularly well known for its medieval banquets, where traditional music, storytelling and dinner create an entertaining introduction to Ireland’s past. It’s a good choice for families with older children who enjoy history brought to life rather than simply viewed behind glass. Better still, Knappogue is only around 25 minutes from us at Hotel Woodstock, near the village of Quin.
